When viewed from an incorrect perspective, the Flood can play into the Gnostic view that The "God of the Old Testament" was harsh and without mercy. However, through the Flood, as well as the confusion of languages at Babel, the mercy of God -- the same God as the One revealed in the Messianic Scriptures (New Testament) -- is revealed as He takes steps to limit evil in the world. Viewed from a correct perspective, we can see these events as intervention to stop man from destroying himself under satanic influence and allow time for God's plan of Redemption to unfold. At some point in the future, God promises to intervene again: with the advent of Messiah and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth.
