God's Judgment of America

This does seem to be a time when everything is in upheaval.  This is especially true of the Middle-East.  There is a popular uprising throughout the Arab-Moslem world.  Some refer to this phenomenon as the “Arab Spring”.

The rulers of Tunisia and Egypt have already been deposed.  The ruler of Yemen will likely follow soon.  There is violent civil war in LibyaBahrain, Jordan and Saudi Arabia are being threatened.  Finally, and probably most significant is the uprising in Syria.  These struggles will most likely result in the current leadership being replaced by more radical Islamic groups.  This is true in each case cited above with the possible exception of Syria.

The Obama Administration’s Position

Mr. Obama was elected with the promise of “hope and change”.  I don’t know about the “hope” but he sure has dished up “change”, especially in the area of foreign policy.  He has apparently shunned America’s traditional allies and embraced our enemies.  There have been a number of attempts made to explain his actions.  Most commentators admit being baffled by the administration’s policies.  Whatever the reason for these policies, it seems obvious that Mr. Obama favors the establishment of Moslem hegemony across the Middle-East.  Evidently he believes that a much diminished U.S. influence there with a corresponding growing influence of a unified Ummah would bring about a proper balance of regional powers.  At present, states led by the Muslim Brotherhood perhaps cooperating with Iran appear to be the most likely entity that can provide the vision and muscle to establish Moslem hegemony.  Mr. Obama concurs with the broad Moslem consensus that the primary problem in the Middle-East is the existence of the nation of Israel.  From the very beginning of his administration, he has set forth an anti-Israel policy.  He proclaimed as much in his June 2009 speech in Cairo.  In the “so-called” peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians, he demanded catastrophic compromises of the Israelis beyond what the Palestinians had demanded.  The Palestinians simply adopted the demands made by Mr. Obama and that became their negotiation position.   If Israel were to agree to these demands it would threaten her very existence.

Biblical Insight

Sometimes I hear people speaking of God “moving in mysterious ways, His wonders to perform”.  What God has done in the 20th and now the 21st centuries is no mystery.  The most frequent prophetic promise recorded in the Bible is that God would bring, once again, the people of Israel to the land of Israel – the ingathering of the Jewish people.  Our generation has been a witness to this miracle.  This is, without question, the greatest miracle of our age.  Most Bible believing Christians recognize this miracle.  On the other hand, some still cling to outmoded position of replacement theology and refuse to acknowledge the Biblical significance of the modern state of Israel.  It must be amusing to God to see that some traditional Christians leaders are falling into the same trap relative to Israel as traditional Jewish leaders did toward Christians in the days of the early Jerusalem church (see Acts 5:33-39).

Governments are under the influence of the principalities and powers spoken of by the Apostle Paul (Ephesians 6:12) what he called the “world forces of this darkness”.  It is, therefore, not so surprising to see most governments across the globe line up in opposition to Israel.  During the modern era, the lone exception to this has been the United States of America even though that support vacillated at times.  The Obama administration represents a radical shift in this direction.  His administration has been hostile to Israel from the beginning.  His most pressing foreign policy initiative has been to establish a Palestinian state in the heart of the Land of Israel, i.e., to divide the land of Israel. God warned the nations concerning dividing the land of Israel, His land (Joel 3:2).

What are the consequences of this position?

Judgment has come to America.  Some envision judgment in the form of natural disasters like violent storms (hurricanes and tornadoes), earthquakes, floods or forest fires.  Obviously we are seeing these things in an unprecedented way.  However, I tend to see God’s judgment in terms of the lack of national leadership.  When a nation, at the grassroots level, forsakes righteousness and embraces sin, judgment will surely follow (Jeremiah 22:1-5).  A nation that murders a significant fraction of its babies, one in which murder is commonplace in the streets and where greed and deception replace individual responsibility and accountability will certainly face judgment.

The Obama administration is the instrument of that judgment.  Mr. Obama’s deliberate weakening of the U.S. is leading us to join other nations, in particular, the Islamic nation in opposing Israel.  Soon, all nations including the United States will join forces to come against Israel just as predicted by the ancient Hebrew prophets (Ezekiel 38-39, Zechariah 12:2-3, Joel 3:2)  The expressed reason for international action will be to establish the “legitimate” rights of the (fictitious) Palestinian people.  The real reason will be that the nations are acting in concert with Satan in an attempt to resist God’s redemptive purpose.  Not only does the Bible predict such a confrontation, it clearly outlines the outcome.  God will severely judge those nations that come against Israel.

If Christians ever believed to pray for the well-being of America, this is the time.  Even though the present political leadership is anti-Israel (hence, anti-Christ), the vast majority of honest, peace-loving Americans are God-fearing and support Israel.  We should pray for a radical change in leadership in the nation which reflects the heart and soul of grassroots America.
