“Freeze, Peace Now”

It’s just over two weeks since our mid-term elections.  It was an election that will no doubt go down in history with distinction.  With no room for ambiguity, the American people gave the Obama administration a shock for which they were not prepared.

The election seemed to amount to a repudiation of the Obama administration’s domestic policy.  The boldest statement that was made to the administration was that its continuance following the elections of 2012 was uncertain.  Whereas before it seemed so obvious that there would be an unchallenged eight-year reign of Mr. Obama, now it seems that his time might be short.

Coming into power, the Obama “tsunami” touted lofty goals with mantras such as: “Yes we can!” and “Change you can believe in”.  Not very clear, though, was what the administration’s foreign policy ideology was towards Israel.  It was assumed that like all of its predecessors, they would walk that fine line between showing support for Israel and subtly applying enough pressure to manipulate the Israeli government towards compliance with Israel’s enemies.  Within six months of his presidency, Mr. Obama began to indicate that there was going to be a “change” in the status quo as it relates to Israel.  We saw almost immediately that Mr. Obama and his administration were no friends to Israel and they were very bold in letting it be known. This awarded them the dubious honor of being the first American administration in Israel’s short history to be actively and openly anti-Israel.

In the past two weeks there has been a very notable increase in diplomatic hostilities towards Israel by this administration.  There seems to be a sudden desperation on the part of the administration to secure further construction “freezes” in east Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria.  Now, I do not claim to be an authority on U.S. Israeli politics but I know enough to recognize this: this administration has “seen the writing on the wall” and is suddenly hard pressed to attain its primary objective concerning Israel.  That primary objective is a Palestinian State in the midst of Israel.  Could it be that Mr. Obama’s narcissism would not allow him to perceive that his administration would not be the one to succeed in brokering a historic deal for peace in the Middle East?  I think it’s very possible.  Nevertheless, the franticly desperate descent upon Israel by this administration can only mean that they perceive their time as being short.

Is it inconceivable that of all the stated goals of this administration, it’s most important was one which is unstated?  I do believe that Mr. Obama sees himself as “the one” who would affect the necessary “changes” to attain the implementation of a Palestinian state.  Please don’t allow my reflected feelings on Mr. Obama to interfere with my basic thesis.

I think it is clear.  We have an administration that perhaps unlike its predecessors, is more than willing to show it’s abhorrence to Israel and to the God of Israel.  How accurate was the psalmist when he wrote:

“Why are the nations in an uproar and the peoples devising a vain thing? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, let us tear their fetters apart and cast away their cords from us! He who sits in the heavens laughs, the Lord scoffs at them.” Psalm 2:1-4
